Time to rummage through those personal and family photo albums -- we're looking for photos!
In particular, we're looking for iconic shots and city views taken between 1940 - 1990 in and around Riverside, especially those where the landscape has significantly changed. From downtown to Arlington and from UCR to La Sierra, think: buildings, shopping centers, street scenes, schools, homes, previously vacant lots -- just about anything and everything.
Tyler Mall and Riverside Plaza? Magnolia and University avenues? Mt. Rubidoux and Riverside International Raceway? March Air Force Base and Camp Haan? Main Street and the downtown pedestrian mall? Basically, if you've got it, we want to use it.
The photos can be of any size and either B&W or color, but the larger -- and higher quality -- the better. And of course, if we use it, you'll get photo credit.
If you have a photo you'd like to share, let us know: webmaster(at)raincrosssquare(dot)com.
And thanks!
In about 1995 I donated a 8mm film reel to Vince Moses, then of the Museum. The film was of downtown riverside in EITHER the late 30's/40's or 50's. There was no "event" on the film, but rather just street scenes. Nevertheless, it was taken by a family member and when she passed away, I recognized it as a nice contribution to the city's collective memory. I would love to see it again. I don't recall the museum ever acknowledging it, so I honestly don't know what he did with it, if anything.
Had I known about the internet then, and this site, I would have given it to you instead.
Tami, thanks for the info. The Riverside Metropolitan Museum has an extensive collection of local photos and artifacts, many of which simply cannot be displayed partly due to a shortage of space (hence the need for an expanded facility). At any rate, it would be great to track this film down as indeed it is likely to be a rare item.
